When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”
Pork doesn’t play a prominent role in the Bible, but hospitality certainly does.
I love this passage from John 21, not least because of the casualness with which Jesus — the risen Christ! — stokes a charcoal grill. The Son of Man, capable of anything, including rising from the grave and the forgiveness of sins, still makes it a priority to break bread and eat with his closest friends.
What a mind boggling image: Why is Jesus suddenly cooking fish over an open fire?!
For some, this story might therefore seem like a random interlude — one of those asides that doesn’t fit into a bigger gospel picture. And I suppose that a pig roast in the middle of nowhere could give off a similar vibe.
In fact, that apparent randomness, that lack of connection, seems precisely the point. True fellowship can’t occur within the confines of a lesson or moralistic fable. It has to occur out in the open — a simple welcoming table for all, devoid of making a point other than, “Come. Eat. Be brothers and sisters with me.”
When we first thought about doing a pig roast at Restoration last year, that was the goal we had in mind. An opportunity unlike most others, to invite anyone, bring anyone, have fun with anyone. A time for family and friends, not apart from God’s word, but fulfilling it through acts of fellowship.
A little out of the way. A little out of the ordinary. But delicious — and a great way to reconnect with those we love.
