Happy Mother’s Day
On Friday, my Mom cooked a GIANT pan of lasagna– probably the biggest these eyes have ever seen. My little sister had just had a baby and all of the family was coming into town for a visit. My mom is a remarkable hostess. She has the gift of hospitality. She will work all day to clean and cook and then cheerfully greet people at the door and facilitate conversation for the whole evening. People love coming to my parent’s house. She thinks about others and what they would enjoy. She works hard to create space for them to be at ease. She sincerely loves ‘including’– in whatever she is doing. I love that about my Mom.

I am really thankful that every day of my life until she died my mom prayed for me and my family. I was thinking about her this morning – Simon and I were running a half marathon, and for quite a while I was behind a girl in a t-shirt which said “i’m running for my mom – a survivor” and sadly, my mom was not a survivor -she died about 17 years ago when she was 61 from brain cancer. I still miss her – but I am grateful for her legacy as a prayer warrior…. and loads of happy memories of her laughing.

I am thankful that my mom worked so hard keeping house (laundry, cleaning, meals, etc.), so that I could focus on being a kid. I am also thankful that my mom instilled good morals and values in me that have helped me make (mostly) good choices for my entire life.

I am thankful that my Mom loved to travel, and did that however she could, with 7 kids and her husband’s social worker salary. Every August, four weeks or more, in a pop-up camper and a couple tents, covering ground all over the US and Canada. And nearly all of us kids caught the bug. I am thankful for that—her curiosity, her love of nature, her organizing skills, her quest for the secluded campsites, the best angles for photos, the uncharted ground, and, well, just the raw courage it all took.

To elizabeth…………thanks a heartful for your wonderful mother’s day mesage. It was (as you are) beautiful! In hindsight raw courage sounds so impressive. In reality it might just have been that I was so desperate to “get out of the house” . Love, your Mummy.

David, one of the things I appreciated about visiting your parents’ house was the special loft area they had prepared for the grandkids. Clearly, this is a woman who doesn’t just enjoy seeing her grandchildren as guests, but also wants to give them a sense of special place and ownership in their Winchester home-away-from-home.
