4 lies about sex
We are in the middle of a series on Jesus’ message to the churches in Asia (Revelation 2-3). This past week we dug into Pergamum and Christ’s concern that they have in their midst those who encourage compromise– to stop being so different. Just do what everyone around you is doing and quit sticking out.
The premise upon which all of life is built is this: our behavior reveals what we truly believe. We will always act in accordance with our beliefs. You might say you believe something, but your actions will show your true convictions. Example– you might say you believe that chair can hold you… but if you always sit in the one next to it, that’s the one you believe in.
Behavior flows from belief, which is why LIES are so dangerous. Consuming falsehood and believing it to be true can have catastrophic results on our behavior. No where is this more true than with regard to our sexuality.
The sermon suggest 4 lies we have consumed about sex, 4 truths that we should consume about sex, and 4 calls to action in response to the lies and truth about sex that are out there. We’ll hit the lies today. Check back for the truths and the calls to action…
4 Lies We Consume About Sex
1. Sex will satisfy my deepest longings. We believe if we can just have sex as often and with whoever we want, we will be satisfied. The deep ache and longing will go away.
2. We have a right to sex. If my deepest satisfaction comes from having sex, then nobody gets to stand in the way of me having the sex I want when I want it– no government, no religious body, no social institution. Sex meets my deepest needs and I have a right to it.
3. What I do with my body does not affect my heart, soul, or mind. Rene Descartes was one of the most winsome enlightenment advocates of this mind-body dualism. The consequences of this belief are the hook-up, the friend with benefits, the massage parlor triste, the multiple affairs…
4. We believe everyone is having sex but me. There is a belief among single people that if a married couple is behind closed doors for more than 10 minutes, they are probably having sex. We assume that everyone is having sex all the time and that it is really great. Everyone else is having their needs met, but me.
All of it is lies.
And we consume it everyday to the devastation of our souls.
