As I’ve mused on this over the course of this week I’ve wondered whether there is also more of a role for the body being responsible for recognizing and speaking out the gifts of others. Perhaps as I listen to God and do the stuff he’s calling me to I won’t necessarily know which ‘gift’ I’m operating out of, but others around me might be more aware, and in a stronger position to encourage me to develop that area. I feel much more comfortable with that direction! The conclusion is the same, however, in that it helps if we have a culture of being attentive to what God is doing in the lives of others, alert to opportunities to help each other to grow and mutual accountability perhaps if we feel people are missing some of the good God is doing in them! We love doing what we call ‘Georgian toasts’ (because Simon first came across the tradition on a trip to Georgia, Russia) – where over a meal you take time to each affirm an individual in their gifts. i know others in the church do this, perhaps on birthdays or special occasions – but again, it’s a lovely habit of calling each other to live out, develop and rejoice in the gifts, abilities and skill sets that God has given.
