Getting Left Overs to those who need it most

This summer, folks from Restoration have been hitting the Columbia Pike farmers market on Sunday afternoons and delivering whatever is ‘left’ to the Arlington Food Assistance Center.  It’s hot, sweaty, and sticky work.  One week, our team put 2000 pounds of vegetables into bags for those who are hungry in Arlington County.

Here’s one person’s reflection captured in a quote from Julian the Apostate (last empower of the Constantian dynasty–not a believer, as his name probably suggests…)

“Those impious Galileans not only feed their own poor, but ours also; welcoming them into their agapae, they attract them, as children are attracted, with cakes….”Whilst the pagan priests neglect the poor, the hated Galileans devote themselves to works of charity, and by a display of false compassion have established and given effect to their pernicious errors.  See their love-feats, and their tables spread for the indigent.  Such practice is common among them, and cause a contempt for our gods.”

We pour contempt on the gods of this age as we connect the generosity of local farmers to the tables of those who are most in need.
