Please sign up to join us on Saturday, July 16 as we partner with Comunidad to deliver groceries to recently arrived Afghan refugees. We have slots open on Saturdays once a month. We meet at the Wilson Center in Falls Church and volunteers will be placed in pairs, and each pair will deliver groceries to 4-6 families. Children are welcome to join with their parents. If it’s your first time volunteering for this food distribution, you will be asked to complete a background check.
2) Financial Sponsor for a Ukrainian Family
A Ukrainian family in Arlington area is seeking a sponsor to assist them in flying the wife’s parents from Ukraine to the United States under the Uniting for Ukraine, a new process to provide Ukrainian citizens who have fled the war a way to come to the United States. Please read below and contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions and would like to assist.
The family states they do not need financial support. The husband works online and has an income. But his work and income does not meet the requirements for the financial sponsor form. The wife is pregnant and currently not working. They are asking if there is someone in the church who would be willing to serve as a financial sponsor.
Restoration Immigration Legal Aid is aware of the case and describes the responsibility of serving as a financial sponsor below.
What is a financial sponsor?
Ukrainians must have a financial supporter in the United States. Supporters initiate the Uniting for Ukraine process by filing the Form I-134 Declaration of Financial Support and providing information about themselves and the Ukrainian beneficiary. Supporters will be vetted by the U.S. government to ensure that they are able to support Ukrainians and to mitigate against potential exploitation.
Every Ukrainian seeking authorization to travel to the United States to seek parole must be supported by a U.S.-based individual, including representatives of non-governmental organizations. Each supporter must pass security and background vetting and demonstrate sufficient financial resources to “receive, maintain, and support” the Ukrainians they commit to support.
3) Grocery Support
We continue to assist families who have struggled to obtain food assistance while they wait for their paperwork to clear for SNAP and other food assistance programs. If you would like to support these families, you can purchase gift cards from Giant (the closest grocery store with some Halal options) or VISA gift cards and bring them to church.
Contact Scott to let him know you are dropping off grocery store gift cards. You can mail them to the church: Restoration Anglican Church c/o Rev. Scott Buckhout – 1815 N Quincy St. Arlington, VA 22207. He will coordinate getting the cards to the families.
