Prelude for Hurricanes

Ain’t no safe place, but in Your arms…”
Our prelude this Sunday is surprisingly reflective of our physical state with earthquakes, hurricanes, famines, and war. Rooted in Psalm 46, David references the instabilities of this world and the faithfulness of our God in the midst of crazy times.
The end of Psalm 46 says:
“He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
He burns the chariots with fire.
Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
The Lord of hosts is with us:
“Ain’t gonna find, no place to hide
But in You, My God.”

Thanks for the blog post Matt! I was hoping to hear something weather related on RAC’s blog.
Ah Psalms 46. It’s one I worked to memorize in college (after a particularly tumultuous freshman year). P46 offers a perfect combo special of what I think is so great about the Psalms. This short poetic treatise of comfort and courage underscores who God is and how he sees us in light of the real (unnerving) stuff around us.
I really dig that it describes God’s presence as a fortress. Twice! That’s comforting. All the troubles of the earth are treated with vivid frankness (nations in uproar, mountains quake with surging). Then God’s action in the middle of this real chaos is bigger, stronger (burns, breaks, shatters, makes things melt with His voice). And our part–instead of evacuating–is to BE STILL. Amazing. I love this Psalm. Can’t wait to sing it on Sunday.
