Last week in David’s Rector’s Update, he mentioned the need and opportunity to help Afghan refugees will be with us for the next number of months. We wanted to create a regularly updated list of ways you can pray, give, and serve below:
Pray: If you go to the OneHeartDC page for Afghans, you will find a simple guide to help you pray– including prayers of lament, Scriptures to ground you, and intercessions to focus your requests. We will also continue to pray in our Sunday worship and in our small groups that start the week of Sept. 12.
Give: We are grateful for the work of Lutheran Social Services who has created two ways to meaningfully give to the needs of Afghans in our midst.
1) In-kind Donations: Collecting Gift Cards, Cell Phones, Laptops, and Tablets at Restoration: Afghan families currently need gift cards (particularly to Visa, Target, Walmart, Giant, Uber, and Lyft) phones, computers, and tablets. Without a contact phone number or access to the internet, refugees cannot do basic things such as get their children registered for school, contact friends or the social service agency, or make emergency phone calls, etc. If you need suggestions for affordable devices, Lutheran Social Services listed them on their Amazon Wish List page.
Restoration will be collecting these items at Restoration in a box on the 3rd floor of the church offices for the next two weeks. You can bring gift cards and tech devices to the church between 8 am and 12:30 pm on Sundays, September 12 & 19.
Please note: they are not able to accept any used items at this time.
2) Rent Assistance: Lutheran Social Services is working with 55 Afghan families who are now living in the Fairfax and Hyattsville areas. They have rent payments due on September 15, and LSS is fundraising to help them with those payments.
If you would like to provide rent assistance, you can only do this with a mailed check at this time. Please write, “Rent Assistance for Afghan Allies” in the memo line and then mail the check to:
